Braum the Heart of the Freljord
He is a top-tier defensive pick because Mayhem's high damage output makes his shield invaluable. He excels at neutralizing poke and protecting all-in teammates, but he struggles to close games alone if his team lacks damage. Pick him when your composition has carries who need time to scale.
Your job is to stand between the enemy and your squishies. You block key projectiles with Unbreakable (E) and disrupt engages with Winter's Bite (Q) and Glacial Fissure (R). You enable your team to walk forward by absorbing the enemy's first big burst.
Use it to apply passive stacks on the enemy frontline or anyone trying to engage. If you hit a target, your team can quickly stack the stun, forcing them to retreat. Save it when an enemy dashes in so you can peel immediately.
Max E first against heavy poke compositions like Nidalee, Varus, or Zoe. The shield reduces massive amounts of damage and protects your health bar during sieges. Put points into Q first only if you need the extra damage and slow to chase down kills.
Basic attacks and Q apply stacks, and after four stacks the target is stunned and takes bonus magic damage. In Mayhem's chaotic fights, you often get multiple stuns off on different targets just by auto-attacking during the chaos. Coordinate with your team to focus fire one target and trigger the stun faster.
Use it as a counter-engage tool when the enemy team dives your backline. The knockup creates a zone that slows anyone crossing it, giving your team space to reposition. You can also use it to start a fight if you land a Snowball on a high-value target.
Snowball is your primary engage tool, but do not waste it on full-health tanks. Fly in only when you see a mispositioned carry or when your team is ready to follow up. If the enemy has heavy burst, save Snowball to reposition your shield rather than diving deep.
Start with tank support items like Locket of the Iron Solari to shield your team from burst. Follow up with Knight's Vow to protect your strongest carry and Heartsteel or Warmog's Armor for sustain. Avoid pure damage builds because your utility scales better with survivability.
Look for augments that boost your defensive stats, cooldown reduction, or healing. Augments that increase your size or shield strength make your Unbreakable cover more of the map. Avoid pure damage augments since your value comes from blocking and stunning, not killing.
Stand in front of your teammates and intercept hooks with your body or shield. If you get hooked, pop Unbreakable immediately to block the follow-up damage. Your passive lets you stun the hook user, stopping their all-in before it starts.
High sustained damage and crowd control that bypasses your shield are your worst enemies. Champions like Cassiopeia or Karthus can spam damage through your shield cooldowns. AoE crowd control also locks you down before you can block for your team.
Prioritize magic resistance items like Force of Nature or Kaenic Rookern. Your shield blocks physical projectiles, but it does not stop most magic abilities, so you must build tanky against AP compositions. Locket of the Iron Solari remains useful because its active shield works against all damage types.
You carry by enabling your teammates to survive and deal damage, not by getting kills yourself. A well-timed shield or ultimate can turn a lost fight into a won one. If your team has no damage, Braum cannot win alone, so check your composition before locking him in.
Hold E when you see a clear projectile coming, like a Nidalee spear or Varus arrow. Do not keep it up permanently or you will be vulnerable when it goes on cooldown. Reorient the shield direction by moving your mouse to block attacks from different angles.
He relies on his team to capitalize on his defensive plays. If your teammates do not follow up when you stun or block, you end up taking free damage with no return. He also struggles to disengage against multiple divers who can flank around his shield.
