Jayce the Defender of Tomorrow
He is a top-tier poke champion because Mayhem's accelerated pace lets him spam Acceleration Gates on cooldown. You get to the late-game power spike much faster than in Summoner's Rift. The tradeoff is that everyone else also gets their powers faster, so one bad engage kills you.
Prioritize ability haste or raw attack damage to fuel your ranged poke. If you see a heavy engage composition on the enemy team, a defensive option that grants tenacity or a small shield can save you from inevitable all-ins. Pure damage is greedy and works best when your team has plenty of peel.
Max R first to unlock the full potential of your transformation stance, then focus on Q for the Shocking Blast damage. Putting points into E lets you fire more Acceleration Gates, which lowers your Q cooldown when the projectile passes through. W is useful for burst but offers less map control than your gate.
Cast E directly in front of Jayce, then immediately fire Q through it. This speeds up the projectile, drastically increases its range, and deals bonus damage on impact. You can also place the gate on top of yourself to disengage with the speed boost if an assassin dives you.
Switch to hammer stance to finish low-HP targets or to knock back divers with your E. The melee Q leap applies a slow, making it easier to land a point-blank gate or escape. Do not walk into the enemy team just to deal melee damage, as you are too squishy to sustain that pressure.
Use Thundering Blow to peel melee champions off your backline or to knock enemies into your tower range. It deals percentage health damage, so it is actually strong against tanks that try to engage on you. Save the mana for this peel rather than using it to harass in melee form.
Start with a mana-heavy poke item like Manamune or a lethality component to abuse your long-range Q. You need the mana pool to sustain constant gate casts throughout the long ARAM teamfights. If they have multiple tanks, rush a Black Cleaver after your first lethality spike to shred their armor.
Stay behind your frontline and keep your hammer stance E available specifically for the knockback. If a bruiser lands a Snowball on you, instantly switch to melee, E them away, and gate the ground to speed yourself back to safety. Panicking and flashing usually wastes resources since the knockback is often enough.
Play further back than usual and treat your role as a disengage peeler rather than a pure poker. Use the gate speed boost to help your team kite backwards while you chip away at the frontline. Going for aggressive melee trades here is a death sentence.
Build an early Chempunk Chainsword or Serpent's Fang to apply Grievous Wounds or shroud their shields. Jayce excels at chipping enemies down before the fight starts, but shields negate that poke value. Coordinate with your team to burst targets when their shield cooldowns are down.
Use it during extended fights or when you are taking down towers, as it fires multiple attacks at max attack speed. In the early game, the mana cost is high for the damage it deals compared to a gated Q. It becomes a powerful burst tool later when you have items and levels.
Every time you switch stances, you gain a brief movement speed burst and your first attack in the new stance is empowered. Use this to reposition quickly after firing a poke combo or to get an extra burst of damage when you engage. Kiting between stances makes you much harder to pin down.
Mayhem mode offers specific mana regeneration augments or relics; grab them if you are spamming abilities too hard. Without mana, you are limited to auto-attacks and become much less useful to your team. Manage your gate usage carefully, as it is your most expensive spell.
Dodge their skillshots while firing your own gated Qs down the lane. Your gate gives you a movement speed advantage, letting you reposition faster than most artillery mages. If you land a clean combo on a squishy target, look for a melee Q leap to finish them off.
He thrives with a dedicated frontline that can lock enemies down for his gated Qs to land. If your team is all squishies, you will spend most of the fight running away instead of outputting damage. He pairs well with hard engage champions who can force enemies to group up for your area-of-effect poke.
