Engage and Tunnel Placement
Rek'Sai thrives on creating chaos before the fight actually starts. In Mayhem, where cooldowns are short and damage is high, you cannot simply run at the enemy team in a straight line. Use your tunnels to flank. Dig a tunnel entrance in the side brush or just out of enemy vision, then wait for your team to poke or for the enemy to overstep. When you see a squishy target use a major cooldown, that is your green light. Pop up from your tunnel, knock them up with your Unburrow, and immediately follow up with Queen's Wrath for damage.
Do not waste your tunnels. Think of them as permanent zoning tools. If you have a tunnel network behind the enemy tower, you force them to play forward or risk getting engaged on from behind. If you place all your tunnels in the middle of the lane, they become easy targets for the enemy to destroy. Spread them out. Keep one near your tower for an escape, one on a side angle for flanking, and one deep in the lane for a quick reposition.
Narrow-Lane Spacing and Burrow Mechanics
The Howling Abyss is a single lane, but Rek'Sai creates her own angles. When Burrowed, your movement speed increases, and you gain tremor sense. Use this vision advantage to track enemy positioning. You can see enemies through walls and fog, which lets you spot a lone target or a clumped group before they see you. This information is crucial for your team. Ping targets when you spot them out of position.
However, do not stay Burrowed forever. While Burrowed, you cannot auto-attack, and your damage output drops significantly. Unburrow to trade, then Burrow again to reposition or chase. This rhythm—Burrow for speed and vision, Unburrow for damage and knockup—is the core of her gameplay. In a narrow lane, enemies will try to poke you down before you get close. Use the side brushes to break line of sight. If you walk down the center, you eat poke. If you hug the sides, you force the enemy to choose between checking the brush or letting you get into melee range.
Snowball Timing and Mark/Dash
Mark/Dash is your best engagement tool when your tunnels are down or the enemy is playing too safe. The combo is simple but effective: hit Mark, dash to the target, and immediately Unburrow for a point-blank knockup. This guarantees your crowd control lands. The tricky part is the follow-up. If you dash into five people, you will die. Only use Mark to engage if your team is in range to follow up or if you are diving a backliner who has no escape.
A smart use of Snowball is to use it as a gap closer for your tunnels. Throw Mark, dash, and then use a pre-placed tunnel to exit after you deal your damage. This "smash and grab" playstyle lets you dive, disrupt, and escape before the enemy team can collapse on you. In Mayhem, where damage is inflated, you rarely have time for extended fights. Get in, knock up, burst, and get out.
Target Priority and Dive Timing
Your job is to kill or zone the enemy carries. Rek'Sai's knockup is a powerful disruption tool that can cancel channeled abilities and stop dashes. When you dive, look for the enemy mage or marksman. If you knock them up, they cannot flash or dash for a brief moment, giving your team a window to burst them down.
Timing your dive is everything. Do not dive when the enemy has all their cooldowns up. Wait for them to use their major crowd control or escape abilities. For example, if the enemy ADC uses their dash or the mage uses their stun, that is your moment to go in. If you dive too early, you get kited and killed. If you dive too late, your team might already be dead. Patience is key. Hover at the edge of your tunnel range, Burrowed, watching for that cooldown window.
Counter-Engage and Peel
Rek'Sai is not just an engager; she is a strong counter-engager. If the enemy team dives your backline, you can Unburrow on top of them to knock them up and peel for your carries. Your Void Rush (R) is also a great defensive tool. If an assassin jumps on your mage, you can ult to the assassin (if marked by your tunnel or if you are just dashing to safety near your tower) to create distance or turn the fight. However, be careful with your ult. It has a long cooldown, and using it to escape means you cannot use it to chase or secure a kill later.
When counter-engaging, position yourself between the enemy divers and your carries. Stay Burrowed to gain movement speed and react quickly. As soon as the enemy commits, pop up. The knockup radius is decent, so you can often hit multiple divers if they are clumped. This gives your team time to reposition and retaliate.
Push/Pull Rhythm and Tower Sieging
Rek'Sai struggles with tower sieging if the enemy has strong wave clear. Her poke is limited to her Burrowed Q, which is not enough to pressure enemies under their tower alone. In these situations, play the push/pull game. Clear the wave with your Queen's Wrath, then look for a tunnel flank. Force the enemy to choose between clearing the wave and dodging your engage. If they turn to deal with you, your team can poke the tower. If they ignore you, you go in.
When your team is pushing, do not stand in front of the tower taking poke. Fall back, Burrow, and look for a flank angle. The threat of a Rek'Sai engage from an unseen angle is often more valuable than the engage itself. It forces the enemy to play further back, giving your team space to chip the tower. If the enemy wave clears faster than you can push, call for a reset. Do not die for nothing.
Behind-State Damage Control
When behind, Rek'Sai becomes a utility bot. Your damage falls off, but your knockup and vision never go away. Shift your focus to peeling for your carries and providing vision with your tunnels and tremor sense. Place tunnels in defensive positions—near your tower or in the side brushes—to give your team escape routes. Use your Burrowed Q to check brushes before your face-checks them.
In a behind state, do not try to be the hero. Diving the enemy backline will likely result in your death with no gain. Instead, wait for the enemy to dive you. Counter-engage with your knockup, protect your highest damage dealer, and look for picks on overextended enemies. Your tunnels can also be used to split the enemy team. If you place a tunnel through the enemy front line and back line, they have to choose which side to commit to. This can create confusion and openings for your team to capitalize on.
Augment Trigger Windows
Augments in Mayhem can drastically change your playstyle. If you get augments that boost your healing or survivability, you can play more aggressively, diving deeper and staying in the fight longer. If you get damage augments, your burst combo becomes lethal, but you remain squishy. Adjust your engage timing based on your augment power. With high burst, look for quick picks and resets. With high sustain, look for extended fights where you can weave in multiple Queen's Wrath rotations.
Some augments may trigger on ability hit or on taking damage. For on-hit triggers, your Queen's Wrath, which hits multiple times, is a great proc tool. Unburrow, auto-attack to reset, then spam Queen's Wrath to stack those effects quickly. For on-damage triggers, your Burrowed Q can safely proc them from a distance without committing to a fight. Use these windows to maximize your augment value without putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
