Team Synergy

Blitzcrank defines the pace of Mayhem ARAM through threat generation rather than raw damage numbers. He forces enemies to play on their heels, creating openings that teammates can exploit. Because the mode amplifies ability haste and damage, a single successful hook often results in an instant kill, making him a premier enabler for burst-oriented compositions. He does not function well as the primary engage tool in a vacuum; he needs teammates ready to follow up or allies capable of protecting him when he overextends for a pull.

Core Teammate Synergies

  1. High-Value Target Enablers (e.g., Samira, Yasuo, Darius)

Synergy Mechanism: These champions possess abilities that require an enemy to be displaced or pulled into melee range to maximize their damage output. Blitzcrank’s Rocket Grab serves as the perfect delivery system.

Combo: Land a Rocket Grab onto a primary target. Before the target reaches Blitzcrank, the ally activates their entrance ability—Samira uses her ultimate or E, Yasuo ults off the airborne displacement, or Darius appends a pull with his E. This layers crowd control and guarantees a full damage rotation.

Best Scenario: The enemy team lacks summoner spells like Flash or Ghost. A hook onto a squishy carry results in a near-instantaneous deletion before the enemy support can react.

Enemy Answer: Edge-guarding. Smart enemies will position behind minions or use their own disengage tools like Janna’s Monsoon or Gragas’s Explosive Cask the moment the hook lands to peel the pulled target away from your follow-up.

Failure Risk: If Blitzcrank pulls a tanky initiator like Malphite or Sett directly into his backline, he essentially engages for the enemy. This is catastrophic in Mayhem where cooldowns are short; the enemy tank can immediately use their ultimate on your now-clustered team.

Recovery: Immediately Power Fist the pulled target away from your carry if you realize it is a bruiser, or use Overdrive to reposition behind your own peel. Do not hesitate to ult to silence the enemy follow-up engage.

  2. AOE Follow-Up Controllers (e.g., Amumu, Seraphine, Sona)

Synergy Mechanism: Blitzcrank creates a single-point collapse. AOE controllers amplify this by layering area denial or crowd control on top of the pulled location, catching anyone who tries to save the hooked victim.

Combo: Hook a target into your team. As the target arrives, the ally controller drops their ultimate—Amumu’s Curse of the Sad Mummy or Seraphine’s Encore—directly on Blitzcrank’s location. This secures the kill on the hook target and zones out the rest of the enemy team.

Best Scenario: The enemy team is grouped tightly near a tower or objective. A hook forces them to choose between saving the ally and eating a massive AOE ultimate.

Enemy Answer: Quick Cleanse or QSS usage on the hooked target, followed by a flash away. Alternatively, enemies with global ultimates (like Ezreal or Lux) may punish your team for clumping up around the hook point.

Failure Risk: Over-clumping. If your team stacks too tightly to capitalize on the hook, a single enemy AOE ability can turn the fight. In Mayhem, damage values are high enough to wipe a clustered team in seconds.

Recovery: Blitzcrank should save his Static Field (R) for the silence after the AOE layering completes. This prevents enemies from flashing or dashing away during the chaos. Use the silence to cover your team’s retreat if the engage goes sour.

  3. Poke and Siege Specialists (e.g., Nidalee, Jayce, Varus)

Synergy Mechanism: Blitzcrank acts as a zone controller. His mere presence forces enemies to hide behind minions, which restricts their movement lanes. This makes landing skillshots easier for poke champions.

Combo: Blitzcrank moves forward aggressively to threaten a hook on the side lanes. This forces the enemy wave to thin out or shift. The poke ally snipes the exposed enemy with a spear or accelerated shock blast.

Best Scenario: A war of attrition where the enemy team is low on health but refuses to back. Blitzcrank can flash-hook or use Snowball to close the gap and secure the finishing blow on a low-HP target that the poke ally softened up.

Enemy Answer: Hard engage. Poke comps are weak to all-ins. If Blitzcrank misses his hook, the enemy has a 20-second window (or shorter in Mayhem) to run him down before he has his primary threat back.

Failure Risk: Blitzcrank steals the poke ally’s kill with an accidental Static Field tick or auto-attack. While kills are good, feeding gold to a support instead of a carry can hurt scaling in the late game.

Recovery: If you accidentally steal a kill, immediately transition into a zoning role. Use the gold lead to build supportive items like Locket of the Iron Solari or Zeke's Herald to buff your carry’s damage.

  4. Chain-CC Juggernauts (e.g., Nautilus, Leona, Thresh)

Synergy Mechanism: Double hook or double engage compositions create a "guessing game" for the enemy. If they dodge Blitzcrank’s hook, they must immediately dodge the second hook from the ally.

Combo: Blitzcrank lands a hook. As the target arrives, the ally support chains their own hook or stun (Nautilus Passive/Root, Leona Zenith Blade). This creates an inescapable lockdown chain.

Best Scenario: Picking off enemies who think they are safe under their tower. The chain CC allows your team to dive, kill, and exit before the tower focuses a target.

Enemy Answer: Spell shields (Banshee's Veil, Sivir E, Nocturne W). These can block the first hook, breaking the chain. In Mayhem, spell shield cooldowns are short, making this a reliable defense.

Failure Risk: Hooking the same target simultaneously. If both hooks land at the same time, the displacement mechanics can bug or cancel out, leaving the target unstunned and angry in the middle of your team.

Recovery: Communication is key, but if overlap happens, immediately Power Fist to re-apply the knockup. Follow with a Static Field silence to prevent retaliation.

  5. Reset Champions (e.g., Master Yi, Katarina, Tristana)

Synergy Mechanism: Blitzcrank isolates a target for a guaranteed reset. These champions need a single kill to trigger their passive and wipe the remaining four enemies.

Combo: Hook the lowest HP or most isolated enemy. The reset champion waits for the target to arrive, bursts them instantly, and then uses the reset to dash into the rest of the enemy team.

Best Scenario: The enemy team is retreating with low health. A long-range hook catches a straggler, granting the reset champion the momentum to chase down the survivors.

Enemy Answer: Focus fire. If the reset champion dives in too early or Blitzcrank pulls a target with full crowd control immunity, the enemy team will collapse on the diver and kill them before they can reset.

Failure Risk: Pulling an enemy with a dangerous AOE ultimate ready (like Fiddlesticks or Amumu) directly into your reset champion. You serve the enemy their engage on a silver platter.

Recovery: If you pull a dangerous threat, use your Power Fist to interrupt their channel if possible. If not, use your own body to block the enemy’s path to your carry, buying time for cooldowns to come back up.

Required Team Functions

Blitzcrank is a facilitator, not a primary carry. He requires teammates who provide three specific functions to cover his weaknesses.

  • Wave Clear: Rocket Grab cannot pass through minions. If the enemy team has strong wave clear (like Ziggs or Heimerdinger), Blitzcrank becomes useless because he can never find an angle to hook. He needs an ally who can quickly thin the minion wave to open up sightlines.
  • Reliable Damage: Blitzcrank’s damage is bursty but inconsistent. He relies on his ultimate and Sheen procs. The team needs a consistent damage dealer who can kill the target Blitzcrank pulls, otherwise, the hook is just a temporary inconvenience for the enemy.
  • Disengage: Blitzcrank’s playstyle invites aggression. When he misses a hook or pulls the wrong target, the team is vulnerable to counter-attack. A teammate with disengage tools—like Janna, Gragas, or Anivia—is essential to reset the fight and protect the backline during Blitzcrank’s cooldown window.
