Team Synergy

Varus operates as a hybrid poke-and-engage anchor in Mayhem. He offers incredible zone control with his Q range and a powerful lockdown chain with his R, but he lacks the mobility to escape bad engagements. He needs teammates who can either amplify his burst window, provide the frontline bodyguard he lacks, or set up the perfect R angle. In this mode, where damage numbers are high and cooldowns are short, Varus thrives when he can fire freely or chain his ultimate into a guaranteed kill.

Core Synergy Needs

  • Hard Engage/Setup: Varus has a strong disengage tool in his ultimate, but he relies on allies to start fights or lock down mobile targets so his Q can connect.
  • Peel/Bodyblocking: He is immobile and vulnerable to dive. He needs a tank or support willing to stand between him and the enemy assassins.
  • Magic Damage Supplement: While Varus deals mixed damage, a dedicated magic damage threat prevents the enemy from stacking armor and effectively ignoring his poke.

Top Teammate Synergies

  1. Malphite (High Value)

Synergy Mechanism: The classic "knockup into execution" combo. Malphite’s R forces the enemy team into a tight cluster, which is the perfect setup for Varus to land a fully charged Q or an R of his own.

Combo: Malphite presses R onto the enemy backline. The moment they are knocked up, Varus fires a max-range Q to snipe the low-health targets or casts R to chain the crowd control, ensuring the enemy team stays down for the full duration.

Best Scenario: The enemy team is grouped near a tower or choke point. Malphite engages, and Varus follows up with a Blight-proc burst, deleting a target before they touch the ground.

Enemy Answer: The enemy can itemize for magic resistance against Malphite, but this leaves them vulnerable to Varus’s physical poke. Alternatively, they can spread out pre-emptively to force Malphite to engage on a solo target, reducing the wombo potential.

Failure Risk: If Malphite engages too deep without Varus in range to follow up, Malphite dies instantly in Mayhem’s high-damage environment. Varus must position forward the moment Malphite moves.

Recovery: If the combo fails, Varus should use his R to disengage. He can pin the enemy frontline, allowing Malphite to escape and the team to reset.

  2. Amumu (High Value)

Synergy Mechanism: Multi-layered crowd control. Amumu’s R creates a massive immobilize zone, turning the lane into a shooting gallery for Varus.

Combo: Amumu lands a Bandage Toss (Q) onto a priority target or hits a flash-R on the group. Varus immediately casts R on the highest damage threat within the snare. This chains the stun, keeping the enemy locked down for 3-4 seconds.

Best Scenario: Team fights in the open river or mid-lane where Amumu can catch multiple people. Varus gets free time to stack Blight and detonate it with Q for massive area-of-effect damage.

Enemy Answer: Quicksilver Sash or Cleanse can break the initial bind, but the follow-up Varus R is often too fast. Tenacity helps, but in Mayhem, the burst usually lands before the duration matters.

Failure Risk: Amumu misses his Q and has no R. He becomes a liability. Varus is then left without a frontline and must play extremely passively.

Recovery: Varus switches to poke mode. He uses Q to check bushes and deter engages while Amumu waits for cooldowns. Do not overextend for damage without the tank online.

  3. Leona (Medium-High Value)

Synergy Mechanism: Point-and-click lockdown. Leona can hold a single target in place indefinitely, allowing Varus to land every arrow.

Combo: Leona uses E-Q combo on a squishy target. Varus auto-attacks three times to stack Blight, then uses Q or E to pop the stacks while the target is stunned. If the target survives, Varus casts R to chain the CC as Leona’s stun ends.

Best Scenario: Picking off an overextended enemy or diving a backline mage. Leona provides the gap-close Varus lacks.

Enemy Answer: The enemy support can peel Leona off, or the target can use mobility spells to create distance after the initial stun ends.

Failure Risk: Leona goes in too early and dies before Varus can get his damage off. In Mayhem, burst is fast; if Varus is slightly out of range, Leona gets melted.

Recovery: Varus must respect his range limit. If Leona dies, Varus uses his E (Hail of Arrows) to slow the enemy chase and retreat to tower.

  4. Orianna (Medium Value)

Synergy Mechanism: The "Ball Delivery" system. Varus acts as a mobile anchor for Orianna’s ultimate, and she amplifies his poke with her own.

Combo: Orianna places the ball on Varus. Varus walks up to use his R on an enemy. As the chains latch, Orianna casts R (Shockwave) to pull enemies back into Varus’s range or keep them there while he charges a Q.

Best Scenario: Varus catches a runner with R. Orianna ults to catch the rest of the team trying to save them. This turns a single pick into a team wipe.

Enemy Answer: Fast assassins like Zed or Talon can bypass the ball and kill Varus before he can react. They force Orianna to use R defensively rather than offensively.

Failure Risk: Varus misses his R. Orianna is left holding her ultimate or wasting it on a tank. The team loses its primary win condition.

Recovery: Orianna uses her W for speed to help Varus reposition. They reset to a poke stance, whittling the enemy down until R is back up.

  5. Braum (Medium Value)

Synergy Mechanism: Defensive wall and counter-engage. Braum creates a safe zone for Varus to charge his Q, which is crucial in a mode filled with projectile spam.

Combo: Braum holds his E (Unbreakable) to block key enemy skillshots. Varus stands behind Braum to charge Q safely. When Braum lands a passive stun, Varus follows with R to extend the disable.

Best Scenario: Against heavy poke comps (like Nidalee or Jayce). Braum absorbs the damage, and Varus returns fire with interest.

Enemy Answer: Flanking attacks. Braum’s shield only faces one direction. If the enemy circles around, Varus is exposed.

Failure Risk: Braum gets poked down or forced to recall. Varus loses his shield and must play far back, reducing his damage output significantly.

Recovery: Varus uses his long-range Q to clear the wave under tower. He waits for Braum to return before contesting the lane again.

Strategic Summary

Varus fits best into teams that can start a fight without him. He wants to be the second wave of damage, not the first body in the lane. If his team lacks a tank, he struggles to find the time needed to charge his Q. If his team lacks magic damage, the enemy simply stacks armor and forces him into a utility role. Pick Varus when you already have a reliable engage option, and use his range to punish anyone who tries to escape the chaos.
