Targets Jayce Punishes

Mayhem mode accelerates cooldown recovery and amplifies poke damage, turning Jayce into a long-range oppressor. He thrives against champions who lack the durability to survive his Acceleration Gate combo or the range to trade back effectively. Once he establishes lane dominance, these picks struggle to step forward for experience.

  • Xerath: Xerath depends on stationary channeling to output damage. Jayce forces him off his pillar with a single Accelerated Shock Blast. If Xerath tries to lock down a teammate with Rite of the Arcane, Jayce can interrupt the channel with a quick To the Skies! engage or simply kill him through the cast time. The range advantage belongs to Jayce once the gate is down. Xerath cannot sustain through the poke and has no mobility to dodge the follow-up.
  • Ezreal: Ezreal relies on Mystic Shot spam and Arcane Shift to create safety. In Mayhem, cooldowns are short, but Jayce’s Shock Blast travels faster and hits harder. If Ezreal shifts sideways to dodge, Jayce places the gate to speed up the projectile and catch the landing spot. Ezreal’s build typically lacks resistances, meaning two clean combos force him out of lane or into a defensive itemization path that lowers his damage.
  • Sona: Sona offers sustain, but her health pool is too fragile to withstand a full Jayce rotation. She must position aggressively to heal teammates, which puts her directly in the Accelerated Shock Blast line of fire. If she uses Crescendo to engage, Jayce can Thundering Blow her away before the follow-up damage lands. She cannot survive the burst window, and her sustain cannot outpace the repeated poke.
  • Varus: Varus wants to poke and chain enemies with his ultimate. Jayce out-ranges the standard Piercing Arrow and forces Varus to charge behind minions. If Varus commits to a Chain of Corruption, Jayce switches to Hammer Stance and To the Skies! to close the gap or Thundering Blow to knock him back, breaking the tether potential. Varus has no dash to escape the all-in once Jayce commits.
  • Kog'Maw: Kog'Maw needs time to stack damage and a frontline to protect him. Jayce ignores the frontline by firing Shock Blasts through the Acceleration Gate directly into the backline. Kog'Maw has zero mobility; a single slow or gate speed-up ensures the projectile connects. If Kog'Maw tries to return fire, Jayce’s range advantage allows him to poke from outside the Living Artillery zone.

Threats That Punish Jayce

Jayce lacks a true escape tool once he commits to Hammer Stance. He is vulnerable to hard engage, burst windows, and champions who can close the gap before he creates space. In Mayhem, where damage numbers are high, a single misstep against these opponents results in instant death.

  • Nocturne: Nocturne is the ultimate answer to long-range poke. His Paranoia removes Jayce’s vision, preventing him from targeting the Shock Blast effectively. Once Nocturne flies in with Unspeakable Horror, Jayce must instantly use Thundering Blow to cancel the fear. If he mistimes the knockback or if Nocturne has spell shielding from Shroud of Darkness, Jayce dies before the fear duration ends. The engage range exceeds Jayce’s safety zone.
  • Malphite: Malphite ignores poke damage through his passive shield and Granite Shield scaling. Jayce cannot chip him down before the shield refreshes in Mayhem’s faster pace. Once Malphite lands Unstoppable Force, Jayce is knocked up and burst down before he can switch stances. There is no counterplay to the speed of the engage; Jayce must flash or die. Malphite also builds armor that renders Cannon Stance ineffective.
  • Zed: Zed dodges the Accelerated Shock Blast with Living Shadow swaps. He forces Jayce to play reactively. If Jayce throws the gate forward, Zed uses the shadow to gap close and lands his full combo. Jayce’s only defense is Thundering Blow, but Zed can wait for the animation or bait it out with a shadow swap. In Mayhem, Zed’s burst window is short enough to kill Jayce before he can disengage.
  • Diana: Diana’s Crescent Strike into Lunar Rush leaves no room for Jayce to breathe. She can shield through the initial poke damage. Once she lands her Q, her R pull forces Jayce into melee range. Thundering Blow creates space, but Diana can recast Lunar Rush to stick to him. If Jayce wastes his knockback, he has no other tool to survive her sustained damage and the pull from Moonfall.
  • Nautilus: Nautilus hooks through minions and brings himself to Jayce. The root on the first attack prevents Jayce from immediately casting Thundering Blow. Depth Charge follows up with a knockup that cannot be dodged at close range. Jayce cannot kite a champion with this much crowd control. Once hooked, he is locked down for the entire duration of the enemy team’s burst window.

Success with Jayce in Mayhem depends on spacing. Punish the immobile and the squishy by keeping the gate active and the shock blasts flying. Against the divers and assassins, hold Hammer Stance cooldowns for the exact moment they commit, and never use To the Skies! for damage when a threat like Nocturne or Zed is off the map.
