Team Synergy for Warwick
Warwick operates as a drain-tank skirmisher who wants to dive the backline and sustain through damage. In Mayhem, where damage numbers are inflated and cooldowns are short, he cannot solo carry a fight by simply running at people. He needs teammates who can either lock targets down long enough for him to trigger his attack-speed steroid and healing, or provide the crowd control required to cover his approach. He functions best as a follow-up engager or a chaotic brawler who cleans up low-health targets.
Core Teammate Needs
- Reliable Hard Crowd Control: Warwick’s own crowd control is conditional or requires him to channel. He needs teammates with point-and-click stuns or large knockups to hold targets still for his ultimate.
- Wave Clear and Poke: Warwick struggles to clear waves before closing the gap. Teammates who can thin the enemy wave allow him to look for flanks or Snowball engages without eating poke.
- Follow-Up Damage: If Warwick suppresses a high-value target, the rest of the team must burst that target down instantly. If the enemy survives the initial combo, Warwick often gets kited and dies.
Top Synergy Pairings
-
Nami (High Value)
Synergy Mechanism: Nami provides the crowd control and mobility Warwick lacks. Her Aqua Prison sets up guaranteed hits for Warwick’s ultimate, and her Tidecaller’s Blessing gives him the extra movement speed and slow needed to stick to slippery targets.
Best Scenario: Nami lands a bubble on a key squishy target. Warwick instantly follows with his ultimate, extending the disable window while Nami’s E empowers his auto-attacks. The target dies before touching the ground.
Enemy Answer: The enemy team can draft heavy disengage like Janna or Gragas to knock Warwick away the moment the bubble ends. They can also build Anti-Heal early to cut down Warwick’s sustain during the engage.
Failure Risk: If Nami misses her bubble, Warwick has no reliable way to gap-close without using Snowball, which telegraphs his intent. A missed bubble often forces Warwick to retreat or die.
Recovery: If the engage fails, Nami should save her Tidal Wave to disengage. Warwick can switch to peeling for Nami using his fear, allowing her to reset and look for the next catch.
-
Lissandra (High Value)
Synergy Mechanism: Lissandra offers point-and-click lockdown that cannot miss. Her Frozen Tomb creates a perfect anchor point for Warwick to dive onto. The combination of her root and ultimate creates a kill zone where Warwick can freely drain.
Best Scenario: Lissandra uses her E to flank or engage, then ults the enemy carry. Warwick follows the engage, using the chaos to land his own ultimate on a secondary target or simply attack the frozen victim with his attack-speed buff fully active.
Enemy Answer: Enemies with Quicksilver Sash or Gangplank’s Remove Scurvy can break the lockdown chain. A reactive support like Soraka can silence the combo, stopping Lissandra from ulting and Warwick from healing.
Failure Risk: Lissandra is squishy. If she dives in and Warwick is too slow to follow, she dies instantly. This leaves Warwick without his primary engage tool and forces him to play passively.
Recovery: If Lissandra gets caught, Warwick can use his E (Primal Howl) to reduce incoming damage and fear the attackers, potentially saving her. If she dies, he must disengage immediately using his own fear and movement speed.
-
Malphite (Strong Value)
Synergy Mechanism: Malphite provides the massive AOE knockup that Warwick needs to land a clean ultimate. In Mayhem, Malphite’s engage range is terrifying, and Warwick can chain his suppression on top of the knockup for a near-unavoidable kill setup.
Best Scenario: Malphite lands a multi-man ultimate. Warwick follows the slam, using his own ultimate to suppress the highest damage dealer while the rest of the team collapses on the knocked-up cluster.
Enemy Answer: A tanky frontline can body-block Malphite’s ultimate, reducing the number of targets hit. If the enemy support has a shield or instant disengage like Taric, they can mitigate the burst window.
Failure Risk: If Malphite engages on a tank with Armor or Thornmail, Warwick might waste his ultimate on a target he cannot kill. This leaves the enemy backline free to kite and damage Warwick while his cooldowns are down.
Recovery: Warwick should hold his ultimate until he sees the low-health indicator. If Malphite’s engage goes poorly, Warwick can use his fear to peel for the backline instead of diving, buying time for Malphite’s cooldowns to reset.
-
Ziggs (Moderate Value)
Synergy Mechanism: Ziggs handles the wave clear and poke that Warwick hates. He softens the enemy team with long-range damage, forcing them low enough for Warwick’s blood hunt to activate. This gives Warwick the movement speed needed to engage without Snowball.
Best Scenario: Ziggs pokes the enemy down to half health. Warwick gains vision and speed from his passive, runs in from an angle, and forces a fight while the enemy is distracted by Ziggs’ bombs. Ziggs then uses his ultimate to finish fleeing targets.
Enemy Answer: Hard engage assassins like Zed or Talon can ignore Warwick and delete Ziggs. If the enemy has high sustain, Ziggs’ poke becomes irrelevant, and Warwick cannot find the low-health targets he needs to activate his passive.
Failure Risk: Warwick creates a window where the enemy backline is exposed. If Ziggs misses his poke or gets caught, Warwick has no damage support. He ends up chasing healthy targets who can easily turn and kill him.
Recovery: Warwick must play a bodyguard role if the enemy dives Ziggs. His fear is excellent for peeling assassins off a squishy mage. Once the dive is neutralized, Ziggs can resume poking.
-
Jhin (Moderate Value)
Synergy Mechanism: Jhin provides the long-range setup and execute damage that complements Warwick’s brawling style. Jhin’s W roots targets hit by Warwick’s damage, and his fourth shot creates the low-health pressure that Warwick loves.
Best Scenario: Warwick runs in and damages the frontline. Jhin lands a W root on a slowed target, allowing Warwick to land his ultimate. Jhin then uses his ultimate to snipe anyone trying to escape Warwick’s drain tanking.
Enemy Answer: Mobile champions like Yasuo or Samira can windwall or block Jhin’s projectiles. If Jhin cannot land his root or ultimate, Warwick lacks the lockdown to secure kills on agile targets.
Failure Risk: Jhin is immobile. If Warwick dives too deep and leaves Jhin alone, the enemy team can easily collapse on the sniper. Warwick cannot always run back fast enough to save him.
Recovery: Warwick needs to track Jhin’s position. If the enemy dives, Warwick must immediately turn and use his E to fear the attackers. Saving the ADC is often more valuable than chasing a low-health kill.
Summary of Team Functions
Warwick fills the role of a Dive Brawler and Clean-Up Artist. He is not a primary engage tank and should not be the first one to walk into a poke storm. He relies on teammates to provide Hard CC for setup and Poke to create favorable health disparities. Without these elements, he gets kited, burst down, or ignored. Pick him when your team already has a solid frontline or a mage with reliable lockdown, and use him to punish anyone who drops below the kill threshold.
