Playing From Ahead
You know you are ahead when you have completed your first major item component while the enemy team is still on starter items, or when you have secured two or more early kills without dying. In Mayhem, Anivia’s lead snowballs fast because your zone control becomes inescapable. Your job shifts from scaling to choking the enemy fountain.
Shove the wave constantly. Use your empowered waveclear to keep the enemy minions under their tower, which forces them to choose between clearing and fighting. If they try to fight you under their tower, your Glacial Storm (R) and Flash Frost (Q) create a kill zone they cannot walk through. Do not dive recklessly; instead, siege by placing your wall and ultimate at the edge of their tower range. If they step up to clear, stun them and let your team collapse.
Use your gold lead to buy control over the Snowball brushes. If you control the middle brush, you force the enemy to play in a narrow line. This makes landing your combo almost guaranteed. When you have a lead, stop trying to hit the tank. Aim your stun and wall at their backline. Even if you do not kill them, forcing them to recall resets the fight and lets you take structures.
Watch for overconfidence. A lead in Mayhem can vanish in one bad fight. Do not face-check brushes to find picks. Use your wall to check fog of war. If you have an augment that increases your damage or reduces cooldowns, start forcing 1v2 scenarios near their side of the map. You have the damage to burst two targets, but only if you land the opening stun.
Augments that grant survivability or healing turn you into a raid boss. If you picked a defensive augment, play more forward. Catch Snowballs for your team and instantly retaliate with your full combo. Your passive, Rebirth, becomes a bait tool when ahead. Enemies will underestimate your egg’s durability, especially if you have resistances. Let them commit to breaking the egg, then have your team clean up while you revive.
Playing From Behind
You are behind when you died multiple times early, lost both outer towers, or lack gold for your core item spike. Anivia falls behind when she misses stuns or gets run down by mobile divers. When behind, your role changes from a carry to a disengage machine.
Stop trying to force kills. Your damage is too low to threaten a fed enemy. Instead, focus on keeping your team alive. Save your Flash Frost (Q) for disengage. Do not use it for poke. If a diver jumps on your backline, stun them point-blank and retreat. Your Crystallize (W) is your most valuable tool when losing. Use it to create escape paths for your teammates or to block choke points during retreats.
Waveclear becomes your only objective. Let the enemy push to your tower. Use your ultimate to clear the ranged minions instantly. If you keep the wave off your tower, the enemy cannot dive you easily. Mayhem games move fast, so stalling for a few minutes often lets your team catch up in gold from passive generation.
Augments can salvage a losing game. If you selected an augment that gives crowd control duration or utility, lean into that. You become a support anchor. Peel for the one teammate who has a chance to carry. If you have an augment that provides healing or shielding, stay in the back and use your ultimate to provide a slow zone that protects your allies rather than trying to damage enemies.
Avoid the "all-in" mindset. When behind, one bad engagement ends the game. Do not Snowball in to start a fight. You will get burst down before you land your combo. Wait for the enemy to engage on you. Let them make the mistake of diving into your tower or overextending. Your wall can pin them against terrain or under your tower. A single well-placed wall can turn a losing defense into a kill.
Protect your egg at all costs. When behind, enemies will try to dive your egg to remove you from the fight permanently. Play closer to your tower or your team. If you die in a bad spot, your team might not be able to save you. Communicate your cooldowns. If your stun is down, play further back. Without your stun and wall, you have zero pressure.
Look for the enemy’s mistake. In Mayhem, players get arrogant when ahead. They will chase kills into your base. This is your window. Place your ultimate at your tower steps. When they overextend, wall them inside your tower range and stun them. You do not need to be strong to land a perfect wall. One good wall can kill a fed enemy under your tower.
