Targets Malphite Punishes
Malphite exists to ruin the day of any champion reliant on attack speed or squishy backline positioning. In Mayhem's chaotic environment, his ability to force engagement from extreme range makes him a nightmare for immobile carries who think they're safe behind their frontline.
Attack-Speed Dependent Marksmen
- Master Yi: Yi's entire game plan revolves around auto-attacks and reset mechanics. Ground Slam (E) slashes his attack speed, breaking his rhythm and leaving him vulnerable during Highlander windows. Wait for Yi to commit to a target, then E directly on top of him. He either fights with crippled damage or wastes his ultimate disengaging. The danger window is narrow—Yi can dodge R with Alpha Strike—but a grounded Yi is a dead Yi.
- Jinx: Jinx thrives on stacking her passive and shredding teams from max range. Malphite's R ignores her traps and forces her out of rocket stance immediately. Once she's knocked up, her lack of escape tools means she either flashes or dies. Punish her when she overextends for Pow-Pow stacks or switches to rockets for a siege. Even if she survives the burst, the attack-speed slow from E ruins her DPS output.
- Vayne: Vayne's short range forces her into dangerous positions to contribute damage. Malphite's point-click Q poke chunks her down before she can tumble in, and R makes her Final Hour irrelevant by forcing a defensive flash. The key is patience—don't fire R at a Vayne holding Tumble. Wait for her to commit to a condemn angle or chase a low-HP target, then punish her aggression.
Immobile Burst Mages
- Veigar: Veigar's cage is terrifying, but Malphite's R travels through it. A Veigar caught mid-animation cannot stop the engage. The threat is Veigar's burst combo—if you dive him at full HP, he can delete you before the knockup ends. Chip him down with Q first, then commit when he's around 60% health. His cage becomes a non-factor when you're already on top of him.
- Brand: Brand wants to spread blaze in clustered fights. Malphite forces Brand to break his own positioning. The danger is Brand's passive detonation—if you dive too deep without backup, he can stun you point-blank and burst you down during the recovery frames. Engage when Brand has already cast his pillar or stun, leaving him with only his ultimate as a panic button.
Threats That Punish Malphite
Malphite's weaknesses are pronounced in Mayhem: sustained magic damage, shields that absorb his burst window, and champions who can neutralize his engage or punish his cooldowns. Once R is down, Malphite becomes a sitting duck with limited escape options.
Sustained Magic Damage Dealers
- Cassiopeia: This is Malphite's hardest counter. Grounded zone prevents R entirely—Malphite cannot slide through her W, making his engage predictable and easily blocked. Even if you get on top of her, Twin Fang spam melts through your passive shield faster than it can recharge. The only play is to wait for her to waste W on a teammate, then flank from an angle she cannot cover. Fighting Cassiopeia head-on is a losing proposition.
- Karthus: Malphite wants to dive and die for his team, but Karthus turns that death into a catastrophe. Lay waste spam chips down your shield constantly, and dying in the middle of your team means a free Requiem for Karthus. The risk boundary is clear—diving Karthus without killing him fast leaves your team vulnerable to his passive. Consider building early magic resist and focus on peeling for your carries instead of hard engaging.
- Ryze: Ryze's spell flux spam deals consistent magic damage that bypasses your armor stacking. His root prevents you from disengaging after a failed R, and his sustained DPS outlasts your burst window. The danger zone is mid-range where Ryze excels—either engage from maximum R distance or stay far back and poke with Q. Getting caught in his flux range without R available is a death sentence.
Shield and Disengage Supports
- Karma: Karma's mantra-shield absorbs a massive chunk of Malphite's R burst, often saving her carry entirely. The speed boost then allows her team to reposition and punish your cooldown. Engaging into a Karma holding mantra is risky—look for moments when she's already used it on poke or healing. If she consistently shields your primary target, switch focus to the secondary carry or Karma herself.
- Janna: Janna's monsoon completely nullifies Malphite's engage by pushing him back mid-R in some cases, or immediately after landing. Her shield also mitigates your Q poke. The threat is her disengage turning your all-in into a wasted ultimate. Bait her ult by threatening engage with Q spam, then commit once Howling Gale and Monsoon are on cooldown. Fighting Janna is about patience and tracking her cooldowns.
Anti-Engage Bruisers
- Poppy: Poppy's W stops Malphite's R cold. If you try to ult through her, you get grounded and stunned. Her ultimate can also punt you away mid-fight, completely wasting your engage. Never engage through a Poppy holding W—flank around her or wait for her to use it on another dash champion. This matchup is about recognizing when Poppy is the gatekeeper and picking different angles.
The core principle across all these matchups is understanding Malphite's role as a burst-engager with a long cooldown window. Hit your R on the right target at the right time, and you win. Miss it, or get countered by grounded effects and shields, and you become a low-damage tank waiting to die. Track enemy cooldowns, respect the counters, and choose your moment.
