Katarina Skill Order
Normal Skill Order
R > Q > E > W
Start Q for level 1 poke and dagger placement. Take E at level 2 so you can Shunpo to a dagger for the reset and immediate escape. Grab W at level 3 to unlock the full trade pattern. From there, max Q first for lower cooldowns and safer damage, then E second for mobility and reset reliability. Put points in R whenever available.
This order keeps you safe. Bouncing Blade lets you fish for damage from a distance without committing to a Shunpo. In Mayhem, where burst damage flies constantly, you cannot afford to dash in just to trade. Maxing Q first ensures you contribute damage while staying near your tower or heal relics. E second gives you the reset speed needed to execute targets and get out. W max last is standard because the movement speed burst and dagger damage do not outweigh the safety and reset timing of Q and E.
Augment-Influenced Skill Order
R > E > Q > W or R > W > E > Q
Augments that change how Katarina deals damage or resets can shift your priority. If you pick an augment that amplifies your ultimate duration, size, or executes, you might prioritize E second even harder to guarantee R resets. If an augment adds on-hit effects or explosion damage to your daggers, a W max becomes viable because you generate more daggers faster, creating more on-hit triggers.
- E-focused augments: If your augment rewards resets or instant burst, max E second after Q. Faster Shunpo cooldowns mean more resets, more dagger pickups, and more R re-casts.
- W-focused augments: If your augment adds splash damage, on-hit effects, or scaling to dagger pickups, max W second. Throw W more often, drop more daggers, and trigger the augment effect repeatedly.
- R-focused augments: Some Mayhem augments extend R duration or add waves. In those cases, you still max R first, but your E max becomes more critical so you can reposition the ultimate or chase low-health targets for the reset.
Watch the augment description. If it says "abilities deal bonus damage" or "on-hit effects apply," lean toward W. If it says "resets" or "execute threshold," lean toward E. If it buffs R directly, keep R priority but adjust your entry timing.
Main Max Reasoning
Q first is almost always correct in Mayhem. The mode is chaotic. You need range. Bouncing Blade gives you a way to poke, set daggers, and soften targets before you commit. The cooldown drops with ranks, which matters when you want to chain daggers in extended fights. Maxing Q also keeps your dagger placement consistent. You control where the dagger lands behind the primary target, which sets up your E reset angle.
E second supports the reset playstyle. Shunpo is your escape, your gap close, and your reset tool. Lower cooldown means you can take riskier angles, pick up a dagger, and still have E ready to leave. In Mayhem, where CC and burst are everywhere, having E up is your only real defense. Maxing it second reduces the window where you are stuck on cooldown and vulnerable.
W last because the ability is a setup tool, not a primary damage source. You use W to drop a dagger at your feet for an instant E reset or to chain into R. The movement speed helps, but it does not scale enough to justify early points. Only max W earlier if your augment directly changes how W works or adds damage to dagger pickups.
Adjustment Triggers
Shift your order based on the game state and augment synergy. Consider the following triggers:
- Heavy poke enemy comp: If the enemy has long-range mages or poke that forces you off the wave, stick to Q max. You need the safe damage. Do not max W or E early if you cannot get in range to use them without dying.
- Melee-heavy enemy comp: If the enemy team has multiple melee champions that dive you, consider E second earlier. You need the reset mobility to kite them. You can also take W earlier to drop daggers at your feet when they engage, giving you an instant reset to escape or turn.
- Augment changes dagger behavior: If your augment makes daggers explode, slow, or apply on-hits, test W max in a fight. If you notice the damage or utility is significant, commit to W second. If the augment feels underwhelming, revert to standard Q > E.
- Snowball reliance: In Mayhem, Snowball is a common engage tool. If you find yourself using Snowball to engage and then E to reset, you may want E max earlier to ensure you have the cooldown for the second or third reset in the fight.
- Team needs cleanup: If your team has strong engage but lacks execution, prioritize E second. You want to be the one who resets on low targets. Faster E means more cleanup speed.
Cost of Choosing the Wrong Order
Maxing the wrong ability in Mayhem costs you fights. If you max W first without an augment that supports it, you lose range and safety. You become a champion that has to walk up to deal damage. In a mode full of skill shots and burst, that is a death sentence. You also lose the poke pressure Q provides, which means your team fights at a health disadvantage before the engage even starts.
If you max E first without the damage to back it up, you become a mobility tool with no kill threat. You can dash in and out, but you do not secure resets because targets do not die. You end up wasting time and taking unnecessary damage. E max first only works if your augment or team damage compensates for your lower Q damage.
If you ignore augment synergy and stick to the default order, you leave power on the table. Mayhem augments are designed to shift how champions play. If your augment buffs W and you still max Q, you miss out on the augment's full potential. You become a weaker version of standard Katarina instead of a Mayhem-enhanced assassin.
If you delay R points, you lose your biggest teamfight tool. Death Lotus is your primary source of multi-target damage and reset triggers. In Mayhem, where fights are frequent and chaotic, having R up sooner and stronger is non-negotiable. Always put a point in R at 6, 11, and 16.
Summary
Default to R > Q > E > W. It gives you range, safety, and reset reliability. Adjust to R > E > Q > W if you need more mobility or if your augment rewards resets. Shift to R > W > E > Q only if your augment directly buffs dagger damage or on-hit effects. Watch the enemy composition, your augment text, and the flow of teamfights. The right order keeps you alive and resetting. The wrong order turns you into an easy target with no cleanup power.
