Targets Jarvan IV Punishes
Jarvan IV thrives against champions who lack reliable dashes or who need to stand their ground to function. His ultimate, Cataclysm, forces bad decisions in Mayhem where death timers and damage are high.
- Miss Fortune: She has no dash to escape Cataclysm on her own. Jarvan can engage from fog of war with Dragon Strike into Demacian Standard, then trap her inside his ultimate. If she uses her own ultimate inside the arena, she becomes a sitting duck for your team's burst. Punish her before she gets her full channel off. Flash-engage is often worth if it catches her mid-Death Ball.
- Katarina: Her Shunpo does not reliably escape Cataclysm unless she has a dagger spawn outside the ring. Jarvan's knock-up from his flag-and-drag combo interrupts her Death Lotus channel. Engage the moment she commits to a fight. If she Shunpos in, trap her immediately. She either dies inside or burns Flash to escape, removing her reset potential.
- Jinx: She relies on kiting and has no built-in dash. Once Jarvan closes the gap, she has very few options. Cataclysm forces her to use her Zap or Flame Chompers defensively, but she cannot leave the ring without help from a teammate. Engage from angles where her traps cannot stop your approach. Snowball helps bridge the distance if she stays far back.
- Vel'Koz: His disengage is limited to a single knock-up on a delay. Jarvan can engage through his poke with Demacian Standard's dash, which is faster than Vel'Koz's setup. Once inside, Cataclysm traps him in a range where his knock-up becomes harder to aim. Force him to break his own formation. He either cancels his ultimate to run or dies trying to finish it.
- Ashe: Her perma-slow is annoying, but she has no dash to escape a hard engage. Jarvan ignores her slows with Ghost or Snowball, then traps her in Cataclysm. She cannot kite inside the ring. The danger window is her Enchanted Crystal Arrow; if she lands a stun on you before you engage, you die. Wait for her to burn it on a teammate, then go in.
Threats That Punish Jarvan IV
Jarvan IV's biggest weakness is his commitment. Once he goes in, he often cannot get out. Champions with strong disengage, long-range poke, or abilities that punish clustering will make his life miserable.
- Janna: She is a nightmare. Her Monsoon completely negates Jarvan's engage by pushing him and his team away before they can deal damage. Even if Jarvan lands a perfect Cataclysm, Janna can ult everyone out of it. Her Howling Gale also interrupts his Dragon Strike dash mid-air. Do not engage into her when her Monsoon is up. Bait it out with a fake engage or wait for a teammate to force her cooldown.
- Anivia: Her Crystallize wall creates a physical barrier that Jarvan cannot dash through. If he tries to engage, she can wall him off from his team, leaving him isolated under the enemy tower. Her Glacial Storm also slows attack speed and movement, making Jarvan's all-in much weaker. Do not fight in her ultimate. Engage from the sides to avoid her wall's direct line.
- Tristana: Her Rocket Jump resets on kills, and her Buster Shot is a hard disengage. If Jarvan traps her in Cataclysm, she can simply jump out or ult him away. Worse, if Jarvan engages and fails to kill, Tristana often gets a reset and jumps onto his backline. Only engage Tristana when her Jump is down or when your team has enough burst to kill her before she reacts.
- Vayne: She can Condemn Jarvan out of his own Cataclysm, stunning him against the ring's wall. Her Tumble and invisibility make her nearly impossible to lock down inside the arena. In Mayhem's high-damage environment, she melts him during his engage animation. Avoid focusing her alone. Peel for your carries instead, or wait for her to commit to a fight before using your ultimate.
- Varus: His long-range poke chunks Jarvan before he can even engage. Chain of Corruption is a death sentence if it lands on Jarvan mid-dash, rooting him and spreading to his team. Varus can also use his Hail of Arrows to slow Jarvan's approach, making the engage telegraphed. Dodge his Q-pokes with side movement. Engage only after he burns his ultimate or misses his root.
The key to playing Jarvan IV in Mayhem is recognizing when the enemy's disengage is down. If Janna has used Monsoon or Tristana has burned her Jump, the punish window opens. Until then, play the poke game with your flag's attack speed aura and look for picks on out-of-position squishies. Never engage into a full team with all cooldowns ready; you will get blown up before your team can follow up.
